Rise and grind: Neighborhood coffee shop opens in historic Redwood City house

At 105 years old, Redwood City resident Louise Prado started a coffee business. After her death in 2022, her niece Chris Sakelarios continued Prado’s legacy by running her online shop Auntie Lou’s Brew. Then two weeks ago, Sakelarios took a big step and opened The Yard, a Redwood City coffee shop in a historic house serving a drink that pays homage to a childhood favorite of Prado’s. Edwina Dueñas talked with Sakelarios and The Yard owner John Feig this week to learn all about Redwood City’s newest coffee shop. 

Moving south to Los Altos, Sophia Markoulakis talked with James Ashe and Roberto Juarez, the owners of Roja, formerly Asa Los Altos. I set my sights even further south to Campbell, where a TikTok trend birthed a new bagel shop offering twice-baked bagels filled with cream cheese and dunked in honey garlic butter.

Redwood City residents transform a historic house into a neighborhood coffee shop

Downtown Redwood City’s oldest building is now home to The Yard, a cafe brewing up coffee, community and history. The business had its soft opening on June 26, serving beverages to go out of its Carriage House.

Pulled pork flatbread at Fogbird

I haven’t had the best luck with flatbreads, yet I keep ordering them because I’m an optimist. Recently, I had a truly horrendous piece of cardboard disguised as a flatbread at a restaurant in San Jose, so when I decided to try Fogbird in San Mateo for the first time, I was a bit hesitant to order the pulled pork flatbread. Turns out, I had nothing to worry about because it was flatbread perfection. I seriously didn’t know flatbreads could be this tasty.

The crust was ultra crispy. The amount of cheese on this thing was insane (cheese pull for days), the chimichurri added this bright zingy punch of flavor that cut through the richness and the onions added a sweetness. I loved that the flatbread came with a tiny bowl of chili flakes because I prefer my food to have spice. My only complaint would be it was a bit skimpy on the pulled pork, but the boatload of cheese on the flatbread made up for it. 

Yes, the drinks at Fogbird were great too (I tried three…for journalistic purposes of course), but I think it would be a shame to skip the pulled pork flatbread.
