Bavarian brats, Spanish tostadas, Colombian pork roast and more: Meet the women behind World Kitchen at Ava’s Market in Mountain View
The first time I was ever asked if I have children of my own was when I was interviewing Gisela Qasim for a story on the recently opened World Kitchen in Mountain View. While my initial reaction was “Wow I must look old” (I’m 23), Qasim was posing a salient question: How do you raise a family while pursuing a career, especially when you’ve immigrated to a new country?
This question led Qasim to found the Creative Collective of Silicon Valley, a team of seven immigrant women who are passionate about increasing opportunities for part-time work for parents in the Bay Area. Their first project as a collective began last month, establishing the World Kitchen at Ava’s Market in Mountain View.
This week I also talked with Yvette Yong, who just opened a restaurant in San Mateo specializing in, well, everything: papadums, Irish meat pies, siu mai, street tacos, pho and more. Meanwhile, Karla Kane set her sights on Cupertino, where there’s a newly opened modern Vietnamese eatery with insanely gorgeous interior design.
Stay tasty,
Adrienne

Cacio e pepe from Vina Enoteca
Cacio e pepe is not only fun to say, it’s fun to eat. And when it’s cacio e pepe from Vina Enoteca, it’s particularly fun to eat. Featuring a cheese crisp that adds an incredible texture and a punch of nuttiness and sharpness, this is one of the best pasta dishes I’ve had in a very long time. The pasta was perfectly al dente, keeping its chew and gripping onto the luxuriously peppery sauce. The sauce wasn’t overly rich or thick, and it let the black pepper shine.
Top tip: if you want to share a portion of pasta, Vina Entoca will gladly split it into two separate dishes (as shown in the photo above).
Vina Enoteca, 700 Welch Road #110, Palo Alto; 650-646-3477, Instagram: @vina_enoteca. Open Tuesday through Saturday 5-9 p.m.
