Palo Alto police are investigating the death of a homeless man whose body was found in a downtown garage on Thursday afternoon, police said.

The man, who police said was in his 60s, was found on the first floor of the parking garage on the 400 block of Bryant Street, which is known as “Lot S.” A passerby reported that they saw a person down and called the dispatch center at about 12:15 p.m., according to a news release.

Police said that Fire Department personnel and officers responded immediately and found the man, who they said appeared to be a member of the unhoused community. Officers closed the 400 blocks of Bryant and Florence streets in the afternoon to through traffic as they investigated the scene. They also brought in a canine unit to search the scene and locate evidence.

While police said Thursday afternoon that they don’t know the manner of the man’s death, they had determined that it was “suspicious in nature.” They currently have no suspects, according to the news release.

The man’s identify was not immediately available. According to the police, the Santa Clara County Office of the Medical Examiner-Coroner will be continuing the investigation into how the man died.

The Bryant Street garage is located near Cogswell Plaza and next to a city-owned building at 445 Bryant St. that the city plans to turn into a new community center.

Anyone with information about this incident is asked to call the department’s 24-hour dispatch center at 650-329-2413 or to send anonymous tips to paloalto@tipnow.org or (650) 383-8984.
