A Mountain View man was arrested on suspicion of trying to stab an acquaintance in the stomach on Thursday evening over an argument about a stolen necklace, according to the Mountain View Police Department.
Dispatchers received a report around 5:20 p.m. on July 4 that a man had brandished a knife at another person at the intersection of Latham Street and Rengstorff Avenue, Mountain View police said.
The suspect, a 26-year-old Mountain View resident, had allegedly lunged at the victim with a curved fixed blade knife, almost stabbing him in the stomach, police said. The suspect then threw the knife in the bushes, which the police later recovered. A witness also saw the suspect brandishing the knife prior to attacking the victim, police said.
The suspect and victim knew each other before the attack, and the assault reportedly started because the victim had accused the suspect of stealing a necklace several weeks ago, police said.
The suspect was arrested on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon and booked into Santa Clara County Main Jail. His bail has been set at $25,000, according to county records.
