Author Colm Tóibín comes to Kepler’s Books on May 7 to discuss his new book, “Long Island,” a followup to his well-received 2009 novel, “Brooklyn.” Courtesy Reynaldo Rivera.

Author Colm Tóibín’s 2009 novel “Brooklyn,” which follows the journey of Eilis, a young woman who moves from Ireland to New York in the 1950s, became a bestseller (and a 2015 film). Now, Tóibín has revisited Eilis’ world with his new book, “Long Island,” set years later, when news about Eilis’ husband upsets her comfortable existence on Long Island and forces her to return to her native Ireland, where she hasn’t been in decades, to ponder her life decisions.

Tóibín comes to Kepler’s to celebrate the launch of “Long Island,” and will sign books after the event. His other books include “The South,” “The Blackwater Lightship,” “The Master,” “Nora Webster” and “The Magician.” He’s also a professor at Columbia University.
May 7, 7 p.m., Kepler’s Books, 1010 El Camino Real, Menlo Park; $15-$64; eventbrite.com.
