Candidates can now file to run for office this November

The nomination period is now open for candidates to file to run for office in the November general election.

The filing window opened on July 15 and runs through 5 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 9. For any races where an eligible incumbent doesn’t file to run, the window gets extended to Wednesday, Aug. 14 for candidates other than the incumbent to file.

Those interested in running for certain local races can get the necessary documents from the Santa Clara County Registrar of Voters office via in-person appointment or walk-in, video conference appointment, or by mail.

These include special district and school board races, including two seats on the Mountain View Los Altos High School District board, three seats on the Mountain View Whisman School District board and three seats on the El Camino District board.

Candidates who want to run for city offices, such as the Mountain View City Council, have to pick up and file papers with the city clerk’s office for the relevant city, not with the county Registrar of Voters.

More information on running to office in the Nov. 5 election can be found on the county Registrar of Voters website. The Mountain View city clerk also has information posted online about running for City Council.
