A 31-year-old man sustained a minor injury to his hand Sunday evening after he was attacked by a stranger armed with a knife in downtown Mountain View, according to the Mountain View Police Department.

The suspect, identified as a 67-year-old homeless man, walked up to the victim and attacked him around 9:45 p.m. on June 2, in the alleyway and back parking area of the 400 block of Castro Street, Mountain View police said.

The two men did not know each other and no reason was given for the attack. The suspect was armed with a knife when police apprehended him, and he was subsequently identified by the victim and several witnesses, police said.

The suspect was arrested on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon and booked into Santa Clara County Main Jail, police said.

The suspect is being held on $25,000 bail, and a hearing is scheduled for Wednesday, June 5, according to county records.
