After 30 years in Sunnyvale, Fibbar MaGees got a makeover.
The longtime Irish pub temporarily closed for renovations March 31 and reopened its doors along Murphy Avenue on June 4. Guests will notice upgraded bar taps and lighting, a new bar counter and sound system, and, of course, improved bathrooms.
“The restrooms are the best in Sunnyvale without a doubt,” said Evelyn Dennis, Fibbar’s co-manager.
It’s not only the customer-facing areas that underwent renovation – the kitchen has been outfitted with all new equipment, which Dennis said will help improve food quality and consistency. The menu is in the process of being changed gradually, adding lighter fare to offset some of the heavy Irish offerings.
“It will change, but we’ll never get rid of our Irish favorites – the shepherd’s pie and the steaks and the fish and chips,” Dennis said.
Fibbar’s renovation comes right after the pub turned 30 in March, postponing its 30th anniversary celebration to August or September. Expect a daytime family-friendly event as well as a nighttime celebration with “singing and dancing and having a baby jig,” Dennis said.
Dennis, who grew up on the east of Ireland, and Michelle O’Toole both took on the role of co-manager at Fibbar’s in August. Fibbar’s, established by Des Nolan and Liam Balfe in 1994, hasn’t changed ownership since opening, and Dennis says she and Michelle hope to maintain Fibbar’s as the friendly neighborhood pub.
“We want to make sure that we keep the Irish culture and the Irish warmth in Fibbar’s,” she said.
Fibbar’s will continue to host Tuesday trivia nights at 7 p.m. and DJs Friday and Saturday beginning around 10 or 11 p.m. with no cover charge.
