Temperatures will soar to the upper 90s this week across the Peninsula. Cities around the Bay Area have opened their cooling centers to help residents beat the dangerous heat that is set to grip the region through early next week.

Daytime highs will be mostly in the upper 60s to upper 80s on the coast, 80s to 100s around the bay, and up to 110 inland. Overnight lows will be mostly in the 60s, with interior areas reaching the 70s.

An Excessive Heat Warning will be in effect from 11 a.m. Tuesday, July 2, through 11 p.m. Tuesday, July 9, in the Marin Coastal Range, Sonoma Coastal Range, North Bay Interior Mountains, North Bay Interior Valleys, East Bay Interior Valleys, Santa Cruz Mountains, Santa Clara Valley, Eastern Santa Clara Hills, East Bay Hills, Southern Salinas Valley, and Interior Monterey.

Forecasters say significant and extended warm conditions will begin Tuesday through the weekend, with multiple days of dangerous temps projected for inland areas. Residents in higher elevations of the East Bay, North Bay and Santa Cruz Mountains are advised to expect increased fire danger due to the winds Tuesday afternoon, particularly over inland Napa/Sonoma and far eastern Contra Costa/Alameda counties.

A red flag warning is in effect for these areas until 11 p.m. on Tuesday. Several preserves in the Santa Cruz Mountains will be closed due to the red flag warning, including parts of Russian Ridge Open Space Preserve, La Honda Creek Open Space Preserve and Cloverdale Ranch Open Space Preserve.

Later in the week, Stanford announced it had closed the Dish, and said it would reopen on Saturday, July 6, with normal operations resuming on the 7th.

Extremely hot weather can impact human health and lead to heat stroke, heat exhaustion, sunburn, dehydration and more. To avoid heat-related illnesses, residents are advised to avoid strenuous activities, drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, wear light clothing, stay out of the sun and check up on relatives and neighbors. Young children and pets should not be left unattended in vehicles, according to the NWS.

“Most individuals will be at risk for heat-related illnesses without effective cooling or adequate hydration, especially with prolonged outdoor exposure,” stated the NWS in a message on July 2. “Overnight lows will warm as well leading to poor relief from the heat specifically in elevated terrain and interior areas.”
